The Romantic Fantasy of Being an Antique Dealer

French flea markets are not polished antique malls with perfect lighting and carefully styled shelves. You mostly see that version on Instagram.

Most of the time, they are cold mornings, muddy fields, folding tables, dusty boxes filled with mummified insects and complete chaos.

While most people are still asleep on a Saturday or Sunday morning, serious brocante hunters are often setting alarms for 4 or 5 a.m. to reach the best markets before everyone else.

Many foreign buyers imagine France as a country full of hidden treasures waiting quietly to be bought for a few euros. The reality is more complicated than that.

The more valuable the objects become, the higher the stakes.

In a way, the antique world is a little like football. There are different leagues.

Every player in a small provincial football club dreams of one day reaching the Premier League alongside Messi, Mbappé or Neymar. Antique dealers are not that different.

But… you may become an exceptional treasure hunter. You may spend years developing your eye, your instinct and your knowledge. But there is no applauding crowd waiting for you at the end of the road.

Most of the time, those discoveries remain entirely private - or perhaps shared only with a few close family members.

(And yes, your dog will always be happy for you)

You want recognition, status, admiration? Forget it.

Antique hunting is probably one of the quietest forms of ambition in the world.

Even if you somehow reach the “Premier League”, almost nobody will notice.
